The first six months of 2012 have passed, which means it is a good moment to look back at some important results. As connected IP networks are an important measurement tool in defining the value of an Internet exchange point (IXP), the focus in this article will be on the latest AMS-IX applications. What type of IP networks applied for a connection in the last six months, and how many of those networks have chosen to connect through a partner are just two examples of questions that will be discussed in the coming paragraphs.
In the first half of 2012 AMS-IX received 55 new applications, somewhat more than in the same period last year. Of these 55 applications, 82 percent originated in Europe, of which most parties reside in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Russia. Another 12 percent are situated in other parts of Eastern Europe. Furthermore, 13 percent of the networks come from North America, and a few percent from the Middle East and Asia. In 2011 more parties from North America and the Middle East joined.
Following the launch of the Partner program in 2004 of which Equinix is a part, AMS-IX introduced a renewed program in 2010, which allows third parties to remotely connect new customers to AMS-IX. The program is very successful, has been replicated by numerous IXPs, and in the first half of 2012 75 percent of the new applications came through our resellers. Compared to the same period in 2011 this amount has increased considerably. For now the top scoring resellers of 2012 are IX Reach and Atrato. EuroTransit joined the program last month, and has already brought us new customers. Epsilon recently signed up for the program and we have high expectations for this relationship. Last but not least is Hutchison Global Communications (HGC), who will soon be connecting the first party from AMS-IX Hong Kong to Amsterdam.
What also influenced the number of new applications is the introduction of the first ‘AMS-IX Enabled’ site in a joint project with TelecityGroup UK and IX Reach. This agreement enables TelecityGroup customers in the UK to directly connect to AMS-IX in the only official AMS-IX enabled sites in the UK. This year, many connections have come through this channel.
Because of the Reseller program a large part of the sold connections are virtual (Mbps). Of the physical connections the most sold type was the 10 GE. New members like Turn Inc, SBB and DSTORAGE requested this size.
Even though the above information already gives a good picture of the business development in 2012, the year is not over yet. We will get back to you with a full year overview in the beginning of 2013.
