To celebrate the launch of AMS-IX New York, we brought classic Amsterdam heritage to the Hudson River with the three-masted clipper Stad Amsterdam. On Friday, April 11 our customers and partners joined AMS-IX’s CEO Job Witteman and Amsterdam’s Mayor Van der Laan to welcome the first neutral and distributed Internet Exchange to open its doors in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.
What makes us stand out is that AMS-IX New York is Open-IX certified. Open-IX has been formed by a group of Internet network operators, content owners and distributors that encourage the development of the ‘European style’ neutral and distributed Internet Exchange model. The biggest advantage of this model is that connected parties are able to easily and effectively exchange IP traffic with all other connected parties directly, without a commercial transit provider being involved. While this Internet Exchange Model has been common in Europe for over two years, this is first time the American interconnection market is seeing anything like this.
This neutral, non-profit model not only makes it possible to exchange IP traffic with other parties within one specific data center – as is the case in existing US Internet Exchange models – but also with other parties in the exchange network that are located in other data centers. By investing in a standardized approach to establishing Internet Exchanges, the exchange of traffic between Internet related parties will become less complex and the associated costs will be reduced. We’ve already welcomed our first customers and have received a number of interested applications.
Amsterdam shares a lot of similarities with New York – a reputation for liberal values, free thought, entrepreneurship and innovation. Both cities have great quality of life, a diverse population and a love for bicycles. What makes this step extra special for us is that the country that ‘invented’ the Internet is using Dutch expertise to further optimize the US interconnection market.
